About
Jemma Sykes
Botanical Artist & Textile Designer Based in the Cotswolds
Jemma Sykes is a London-born artist and textile designer based in the Cotswolds. Fuelled by her love of plants and the natural world, Botanical Observations is a series of intricate botanical drawings inspired by the changing seasons and the flora and fauna found among local hedgerows, gardens and wild landscapes.
Her work explores the idea of cultivating wildness through detailed biro sketches of native flowers budding, blooming and fading. Inspired by the surrounding Cotswold countryside, Jemma’s drawings reflect both a quiet observation of nature and a desire to nurture and curate her own natural space.
Inspired by Nature, Folklore & Textile Design
Imagined compositions are influenced by Jemma’s textile background and her love of constructing lace patterns. Plants are carefully chosen not only for their botanical behaviours, but also for their symbolism, folklore and the superstitions that surround them.
Her work celebrates the subtle beauty found within plants often dismissed as common weeds, treating them with the same grace as rare specimens. This fascination with overlooked details also extends to her chosen medium, the humble biro, favoured for its rich metallic bronze, black and sepia tones, as well as its accessibility.
